General Duty Assistants – Healthcare (GDAs) are also known as “Nursing Care Assistants”, “Nursing Assistants”, “Nursing Aides”, “Bedside Assistants”, or “Orderlies” when working in a hospital environment.

General Duty Assistants provide patient care and help maintain a suitable environment for patients and their families. Key responsibilities include: daily patient care, with a focus on comfort, safety, and health needs.

GDAs work in collaboration with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers to deliver the prescribed healthcare services to their patients. General Duty Assistants should be results-oriented and demonstrate basic patient care skills, communication skills, and ethical behavior at all times. He/She should be prepared to work in wards or clinics in shifts.

A General Duty Assistant has many career options and can grow to take on more responsibility, similar to an entry level nurse, specialize in critical care or other departments, work independently as a home nurse, or even study further to become a qualified nurse.
