Technical skills refer to a person’s skillset and ability to perform a certain type of activity or task. Soft skills are a person’s ability to interact effectively with co-workers and customers. Technical skills are mainly applicable at the workplace. Soft skills are broadly applicable both in and outside the workplace. Soft skills complement the technical skills, which comprise the occupational requirement of a job. It also complements many other activities even outside the workplace. Presently, soft skills are increasingly sought after by employers in addition to standard qualification. Soft skills refer to a number of features such as behavior, personal finance management and communication that allow for personal and professional growth in employees. Studies suggest that soft skills are as important as hard skills in indicating job performance.
Recognizing the importance of soft skills, the Government of India introduced “Employability Skills” for ITI curricula in August 2012.
